This morning, I was attempting to accomplish a task at my desk. I am currently shaking my head as I type. Why did I think this was possible? Deep sigh. Don’t I know better already?
Welcome! Over the next few weeks, I will be introducing myself more and more. My name is Pam and I am a mother of four adorable boys. They call me “Mom”. It’s a title I have longed for. It’s a title I often take for granted. It’s a title that sometimes I want a vacation from. It’s a title to be honored and cherished. This blog will NOT show you a perfect Mother. You are in the wrong place for that. But I appropriately titled it “Jesus and Motherhood” for a reason. I need a LOT of Jesus to do this Motherhood thang! A. Lot.
So as I am siting at my desk, my 11 month old, Walt, crawls under my feet and begins to tinker with my paper shredder. Calm down! It’s not plugged in. I ignore him. He is occupied; I can finish my task. WRONG! BAM! In a split second the paper shredder has hit the floor and in my chaotic beautiful mess, it is appropriately loaded to the brim with paper shreds. Walt has achieved party status! PAPER E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E. Deep sigh, followed by mumbling, followed by “why me God, why me?”, followed by “boys!!!!!! help me!!!!!”, followed by “are you serious? you pooped too”. Breathe with me people…
Thirty minutes later I am unclogging the vacuum cleaner. That was totally on the agenda today! This is life. This is your life too. You might be laughing in this moment because you get it, or you are crying because you too are currently cleaning up the party. Let’s take a moment Mommy’s. Walk into that other room, and take a moment. You only need 2 minutes. Sure, 2 hours would be lovely, but let’s be real. Two minutes to say “Jesus, help me”.
In John 14, Jesus gives us simple instruction about his departure and return. He promises us the Holy Spirit. Our counselor, our comforter, everything we need to make it. He promises us peace. “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:26-28 ESV).
The Holy Spirit provides us so much power that we often fail in remembering His role in our current life and situation. Jesus said He would be our Helper. Now let’s be realistic, I had to unclog the vacuum, but my heart needed a helper. My spirit needed a peace maker. The Mommy moments that make us feel out of control and crazy need PEACE! That’s when you take your 2 minutes. Don’t blow a gasket (I do it all the time), simply say “Jesus, I need your peace. Calm my heart Holy Spirit”.
One last note…when all else fails…join the party. Clean up later.
