Why setting goals is so important

I have a new goal. YAY FOR GOALS! Tuesday is going to be blog day. My goal is to publish a new blog every Tuesday. I am laughing at myself on the inside and stressing out simultaneously. Who am I kidding? This blogging business is work. IT’S WORK! But you know what they say, “a man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder”. As much as I love the ocean, I don’t want to float around aimlessly in life.

The theme of goals has been heavily present in my life lately. I knew that 2018 was my year to dream. Great. Awesome. Let’s dream. Per the amazing Mr. Denzel Washington, “dreams without goals are just dreams, and they ultimately fuel disappointment”. What a simple and powerful statement. I can’t think of how many dreams I have allowed to fuel major disappointment. Why? Because I did nothing with the dream except keep my head in the clouds.

You may have noticed in a handful of my recent social media posts that I have been reading “Girl Wash Your Face” by Rachel Hollis. I can not say enough about how awesome this book is. She talks about dreams and goals a great deal. In fact, she made one statement that has shaken me to the core since I read it. She was discussing how your dream is your dream and can not be achieved by others because “it doesn’t light their soul on fire”. Light your soul on fire. (INSERT FIREWORKS). Holy moly! What a revelation for me. What lights my soul on fire? What lights your soul on fire? I have a lot of assignments, hobbies, “to-do’s”. I am busy. Always busy. I can also be lazy; don’t let this blog fool you! All of these things that I do and I am associated with, are they lighting up the fire in my soul? Transparent moment here… the answer is no.

What does all this mean? I don’t want to tell you that answer either, because then it means I have to listen to my own advice. Ugh.

If I truly want to achieve the dream that is way down deep and ready to explode, then I have to let those meaningless things go or not have as much real estate in my life.

GAHHHHHHH! I don’t wanna!!!! Why are we so determined to hold onto so many things that ultimately are not our purpose, our calling, our passion? Why? Because they make us feel comfortable. They become our back up plan in case the deep dream that truly lights us up becomes too difficult. Ouch. Ya’ll, truth bombs hurt, and I need a band-aid. Maybe two.

Let’s go back to goals. Friends, write them down. Make them measurable. Give them dates. Prioritize them. Don’t wait until tomorrow; write them today. Hold yourself accountable to yourself. We lie, cheat, and steal with our own self all the time. Stop. Be a man or woman of integrity with your own self. All the things that make you an amazing friend, do to yourself. Let’s stop fueling disappointment in our lives, and light up the fire in our soul. I am ready to make some changes and prioritize. Will you join me?

  1. Joining you in the blog goal. Coincidentally I had just purposed to make Mondays my blog day a few hours ago! Though I got some articles scheduled for the next four Mondays, I know my biggest hurdle will be consistency once this month is over. Yikes!
But by His grace, I’ll make it…. one week at a time.
